Jack Phelps
Jack Phelps is a Canadian visual artist and founding partner of Toronto’s New Love Collective. “We’re beachcombers, Jack,” his grandfather told him when he was no more than four, as they stood on a sandy shore in Taupo, NZ. “Most people take it in at a glance before hurrying on to whatever’s next, but if you stop to let your eyes wander, you’ll find hidden treasures wherever you look.” Jack would be told this again nearly a decade after, this time from his father, while wading in the warm waters of a Toronto beach. This intergenerational calling, to comb the world with wonder and patient curiosity and to then transmute what’s found into treasures for others to discover, remains the principal tenet of Jack’s creative practice and a distinguishing feature of his work. Informed by his love of portraiture and his detailed eye for the natural world, Jack’s work features prominently as key artworks in award winning film and television, and in New Love Collective’s interior murals and installations viewable in many Canadian and international establishments.
